    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Commander Sherman W. Betts (NSN: 0-70316), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States. While attached to the staff of Commander SEVENTH Amphibious Force as aerological officer, and assistant planning officer, he assisted in the preparation for the following operations: Woodlark-Eiriwina 30 June 1943; Lae 4 September 1943; Finschhafen 22 September 1943; Arawa 15 December 1943; Cape Gloucester 26 December 1943; and Saidor 2 January 1944. He made an advance scouting trip to Kiriwina and obtained vital information necessary for its successful occupation. He accomplished the Naval Attack Force Commander in each of these operations and rendered valuable assistance. By his professional knowledge, sound judgment, courage and industry, he contributed materially to the successful execution of all of the above operations. His actions and conduct were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Commander Betts is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
