The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Joseph D. Day (ASN: 20613050), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 36th Engineer Combat Regiment, SEVENTH U.S. Army, in action against enemy forces on 8 November 1942. During the landing of his unit on one of the beaches in the Battle of Fedala, French Morocco, Private Day distinguished himself by extraordinary heroic action against an armed enemy. Disregarding his personal safety, he exposed himself to heavy shellfire on five different occasions by entering upon the field of battle to carry back a wounded comrade to a position where medical aid could be administered. His heroic action contributed substantially to the saving of the lives of his comrades at great risk to his own. Private Day’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
