The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign James Huston Bethel, Jr. (NSN: 0-321002), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as pilot of a carrier-based Fighter Plane on 15 December 1944, in the vicinity of the Philippine Islands. Diving in the face of accurate and intense anti-aircraft fire he secured a direct bomb hit on a large enemy transport, causing serious damage and a large fire which contributed to the sinking of the ship. His heroism and skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
