The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class Colon Eldredge Best (NSN: 2687975), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the combat area of the Pacific during the period from 27 March 1945 to 9 August 1945. Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class Best completed twenty flights in a combat area where enemy anti-aircraft fire was expected to be effective or where enemy aircraft patrols usually occurred. His conduct throughout has distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class Colon Eldredge Best (NSN: 2687975), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Plane Captain of a Navy Patrol Bomber assigned to attack Marcus Island at low level in daylight on 9 May 1945. He skillfully and courageously performed his duties during the attack in the face of intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire from gun emplacements and rifle fire from troops, which repeatedly hit his plane. In addition he assisted in the destruction of two enemy aircraft, strafing and bombing enemy installations causing widespread damage, and inflicting severe casualties on enemy troops. His skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Second Gold Star in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class Colon Eldredge Best (NSN: 2687975), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as gunner of the crew of a heavy bomber operating in the Solomon Islands during the period from January to September 1943. He participated in numerous strikes against the enemy, and in patrol, reconnaissance and attack missions, often under adverse flying conditions and against active enemy opposition. His courageous efforts contributed materially to the gains made in that area and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
