The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign John R. Bertrand (NSN: 0-161126), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy during the SECOND War Patrol of the U.S.S. BOWFIN (SS-287), 1 November to 9 December 1943. While manning the Bridge Target Bearing Transmitter under enemy fire, he assisted the Commanding Officer so skillfully, courageously and with such tenacity of purpose during the approaches and attacks on two enemy convoys and numerous other vessels that his ship was maneuvered into position to strike the enemy resulting in the destruction of fourteen enemy vessels totaling over 70,000 tons. His actions and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade John R. Bertrand (NSN: 0-161126), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the performance of his duties as Torpedo Data Computer Operator in the U.S.S. BOWFIN during the SIXTH War Patrol of that Submarine from 16 July to 13 September 1944. His keen understanding of fire control equipment and intelligent interpretation of attack data, were of valuable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting successful gun and torpedo attacks which resulted in the destruction of more than 25,000 tons of enemy shipping. His calm manner and exceptional ability contributed materially to the success of his vessel. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the offices and men of his ship and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
