The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Seaman First Class Earle Morin Berthiaume (NSN: 6668904), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving on board the U.S.S. BROOKLYN (CL-40) during an enemy aerial attack on the harbor of Naples, Italy on 23 October 1943. Seaman First Class Berthiaume was acting as leader of an anti-aircraft gun which was directing its fire against attacking enemy aircraft when he noticed that the gun magazine had caught fire. With great courage and initiative he quickly disengaged the flaming magazine from the gun and with great difficulty threw it over the side despite the fact that he suffered severe hand burns in so doing. His prompt and decisive action and self-sacrificing efforts undoubtedly forestalled an explosion of the magazine and contributed directly to the prevention of loss of life or critical injury to other members of the gun’s crew. The exceptional valor, complete disregard for his own safety, and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Seaman First Class Berthiaume were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
