    August 2, 1944

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate First Class Jack Holmes Berryman (NSN: 4135134), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with a Marine Infantry Battalion in action against enemy forces on Tinian, Mariana Islands, on 2 August 1944. At about 0500, when his battalion’s command post was attacked by approximately one hundred fifty Japanese, Pharmacist’s Mate First Class Berrryman was in a foxhole adjacent to the battalion aid station on which the enemy was concentrating its assault. With extreme coolness he, with another Corpsman, proceeded to deliver heavy and accurate rifle fire into the advancing enemy, killing many of them and temporarily disorganizing the attack. Without regard for his personal safety, he heroically exposed himself to the intense enemy rifle and machine gun fire, enabling the personnel behind him to establish a defense line around the aid station. He remained in his position until an attack by an overwhelming number of the enemy forced him to withdraw. His courageous delaying action was a major factor in the repulse of the enemy on this occasion and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
