The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Norman Rahn Berree (NSN: 0-282924), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane in Fighting Squadron FIFTEEN (VF-15), in action against the enemy in the Central Philippines on 11 November 1944, as pilot of a carrier-based fighter airplane assigned to a strike mission against an enemy convoy, and in the face of intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire, he made a direct hit with his bomb in a masthead level bombing attack on a large enemy cargo ship which later sank. His heroism, courage and skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign Norman Rahn Berree (NSN: 0-282924), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane in Fighting Squadron FIFTEEN (VF-15), in action against enemy forces on 19 June 1944. During repeated attacks by numerous enemy air groups upon our fleet in the vicinity of the Mariana Islands he pressed home vigorous counterattacks and contributed materially to the destruction of the hostile air force and to the defense of our forces during which action sixty-seven enemy airplanes were destroyed in the air by his squadron alone. Although outnumbered he repeatedly intervened with such decisive effect as to destroy personally two fighters and one dive bomber. His heroism, courage, coolness and skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Lieutenant Berree completed his fortieth flight in a combat area where enemy anti-aircraft fire was expected to be effective or where enemy aircraft patrols usually occurred. His conduct throughout has distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character.
