    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Motor Machinist’s Mate Second Class Edward L. Bernie (NSN: 2127540), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States. While serving on board Motor Torpedo Boat ONE HUNDRED FORTY-NINE (PT-14( during a night engagement on 29 July 1943, in which his vessel and Motor Torpedo Boat 142 (PT-142) sank six heavily loaded Japanese landing barges, he displayed exceptional skill and ingenuity in repairing both wing engines of his boat after they had been damaged and rendered inoperative by enemy gunfire, and enabled his boat to clear the combat area before daybreak and to avoid certain attack by enemy aircraft. His actions were largely responsible for the safety of his vessel, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Motor Machinist’s Mate Second Class Edward L. Bernie (NSN: 2127540), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action off the mouth of the Kimeui River, New Guinea, on 26 – 26 December 1942. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
