The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant Allan A. Bergner, United States Navy, for heroism while serving in the U.S.S. GAR (SS-206) during the ELEVENTH War Patrol of that submarine. On 6 March 1944, while en route to patrol area, a crew member fell and was injured while clearing the bridge during a training dive. By 9 March this man’s condition was such that early medical attention was necessary. Although his ship was in heavily patrolled waters and only 120 miles from an enemy base, contact was made with another friendly submarine returning to port. With complete disregard for personal safety, he volunteered to perform the hazardous task of transferring this injured man to the other submarine. In spite of the constant danger of surprise attack, adverse weather conditions, and the knowledge that he would be abandoned should his submarine be force to dive, he skillfully and heroically accomplished this hazardous task in a small rubber boat. His outstanding bravery was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
