The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Boatswain’s Mate First Class Robert W. Berglund (NSN: 4112342), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving on board the transport U.S.S. GEORGE B. ELLIOTT (AP-105), which was badly damaged during the engagement with Japanese forces off Guadalcanal Island on 8 August 1942. While fighting fire on board the vessel, Boatswain’s Mate First Class Berglund, with complete disregard of his own safety, made several trips through smoke filled and blazing passageways. The last trip was made in an attempt to rescue a shipmate who had been trapped by the fire. His fearlessness, energy, and initiative were an inspiration to all on board. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
