In an attack on a heavily-fortified enemy harbor near Japan, despite extremely adverse weather conditions and in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire, he flew through the clouds and pressed home his attack at low altitude with the result that severe damage was inflicted on enemy shipping and harbor installations. His conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

As a Division Leader in a carrier-based Bombing Squadron he executed a brilliant attack in the face of most intense anti-aircraft fire, with the result that he scored a direct hit on a large enemy tanker, and his division inflicted further serious damage His courage and skill in carrying out this difficult attack were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
