The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Bennie Berger, United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Naval Gunfire Liaison Officer attached to the FIFTH Ranger Battalion during the assault on the coast of Normandy, France, 6 June 1944, and subsequent advance inland 6 June to 15 June 1944. Leading the initial waves under extremely heavy enemy fire, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Berger displayed great personal bravery and initiative in the direction of cruiser fire in support of the Rangers. Unmindful of his own safety, he remained with the forward patrols assisting the landing force materially with Naval fire support. Later, when juncture with the Second Ranger Battalion had been effected, and on finding no officer with their Shore Fire Control Party, he took charge of both parties and participated in both the advance on Isigny and Grandcamp and was instrumental in the direction of very valuable supporting fires. The actions and initiative of Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Berger during emergencies were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
