The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Carpenter’s Mate First Class Louis Clifford Bergan (NSN: 6387996), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving in U.S.S. OSPREY (AMS-28), when she was mined and caught fire while engaged in the Invasion of France on 5 June 1944. Carpenter’s Mate First Class Bergan, although he sustained second degree burns about the face and second degree burns on the hands, heroically manned one of the two fire hoses available, and by his intrepid action quickly subdued the flames. His quick and effective effort saved the lives of many of the crew who were trapped by the flames. The courage and decisive action displayed by Carpenter’s Mate First Class Bergan on this occasion were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
