The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Ensign Robert Gabriel Berenson (NSN: 0-402954), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights against the enemy during the period between 19 March 1945 and 25 March 1945. As a carrier-based fighter pilot, he participated in a strike against Units of the Japanese Fleet at Kure Harbor on 19 March 1945. During the course of the attack, he dropped two bombs at an enemy battleship with unobserved results and made strafing runs on an enemy submarine. On 23 March 1945, he took part in a strike against Okinawa Jima, delivering rocket attacks against enemy landing craft on the beach of Zamami Shima. On 24 March 1945, he participated in an attack on an enemy convoy in the East China Sea, during the course of which he made a rocket run on an enemy destroyer, and six strafing runs on an enemy cargo vessel. On 25 March 1945, he took part in a fighter sweep directed against Minami Datto, strafing anti-aircraft emplacements, in the face of intense return fire. His skill, courage, and devotion to duty, and utter disregard for his own safety were at all times inspiring and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
