The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Robert John Berens, United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights in operations against the enemy in the vicinity of Korea and the Japanese homeland on 14 July, 18 July and 27 July 1945. By his skill and courage, he was important in the acquisition of valuable information concerning hostile enemy forces. By his heroic devotion to duty, sticking to his post in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire, he aided materially in the sinking of two enemy freight ships, the damaging of another, the damaging of a railroad tunnel and bridge and the destruction of a locomotive. His skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
