The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunner’s Mate First Class Jesse Lee Bentley (NSN: 0-8188345), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on 18 October 1944, as a swimmer making a daylight beach reconnaissance on the Island of Leyte, Philippine Islands. In the face of enemy fire he made his way to the water’s edge where in the surf, he crawled for fifty yards on his stomach gathering intelligence on shore and offshore conditions. By his initiative, perseverance, and bravery he was able to return with vital information. His conduct and courage throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
