Davis (ASN: 35579846), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy, in action against enemy forces in Tunisia, on 31 January 1943. After supporting the infantry for two weeks by laying down barrages, on 31 January Company H, 2d Battalion. 1st Armored Regiment led the attack against German tanks and anti-tank guns. Engaged by a superior number of two enemy tank divisions, a running battle ensued, during which Private First Class Davis’ tank was hit. The tank commander, gunner and Private First Class Davis, the assistant gunner, scrambled from the burning tank and began to run for shelter when Private First Class Davis looked back and saw that the driver and his assistant had not escaped from the burning machine. He saw that the turret had turned, blocking their escape hatch. Without hesitation and realizing that the tank might explode at any moment, Private First Class Davis raced back to the tank which was now engulfed in flames. He clambered up the side with machinegun and rifle bullets rattling off the sides and slid down into the turret. Using a hand lever he turned the turret around and the two trapped men clambered out. He raced with them for shelter, finding a cave where they hid out until nightfall, and then returned to their own lines. Private First Class Davis’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
