The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Radio Technician First Class Raymond F. Bensen (NSN: 5629267), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in the performance of his duties in the U.S.S. BANG (SS-385), during the FOURTH War Patrol of that Submarine from 25 October to 5 December 1944. His outstanding ability while assisting his Commanding Officer contributed materially to the execution of attacks which resulted in sinking more than 15,000 tons and damaging over 4,000 tons of enemy shipping. His calm manner and devotion to duty contributed directly to the success of his vessel. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to all with whom he served and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
