The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Armor) Charles Leo Davis, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 13th Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Division, in action against enemy forces on 29 November 1942 in the vicinity of Djedida, Tunisia. On that date, the Germans attacked the area in force and several tanks in his regiment were disabled and set on fire by enemy artillery. First Lieutenant Davis determined the situation and the superiority of the enemy position. After all of the tank crews had been removed, First Lieutenant Davis returned to his burning tank, removed the first aid kit, all available water and dismounted the cowl machine gun with ammunition. Despite being seriously wounded, First Lieutenant Davis crawled about the fields for hours where every detected move would draw fire from enemy riflemen and machine gunners, giving first aid and instructing the crews to leave the area after nightfall. The successful evacuation of the wounded under the darkness was accomplished under the direction of First Lieutenant Davis, passing directly through hostile positions firing from ranges of less than 200 yards. First Lieutenant Davis’ courage, tenacity, refusal to accept defeat, and heroic saving of lives while others had given up in complete despair, reflect the highest qualities of leadership, courage, and traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
