    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Chief Motor Machinist’s Mate William S. Bellows (NSN: 2283515), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the performance of exceptional service in a United States Submarine during a war patrol of that vessel. During an engagement with an enemy vessel, he volunteered to perform very hazardous repairs. His heroic accomplishment of this work contributed directly to the success of his ship. His conduct was at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Bellows (NSN: 2283515), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepid performance of duty as a member of the crew of the U.S.S. S-41 (SS-146) during war patrols of that Submarine in enemy controlled waters. He displayed outstanding ability, leadership, initiative and coolness under the difficult operating conditions existing during the Philippine and subsequent campaigns, and under repeated enemy attacks and counterattacks to which his vessel was subjected. His work materially contributed to the success of these patrols. His conduct throughout these patrols was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
