The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant Commander Alan Rodway Bellhouse (NSN: 0-68787), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism in effecting the rescue of three men trapped in a magazine of a U.S. Seaplane tender on 17 July 1945, when incendiary bombs had accidentally detonated and set fire within the magazine. Being in the vicinity, he immediately entered the magazine, even though he had no rescue-breathing apparatus, and showing a complete disregard for his own safety, searched for the men whom he knew to be working there; until forced by the intense heat and smoke to withdraw. After withdrawing, he informed the Commanding Officer of the situation in the magazine and begged permission to lead the fire party back into the magazine. Wearing rescue-breathing apparatus he plunged back into the magazine where by his skill and leadership he got the fire under control and effected the rescue of the tree men, none of whom suffered any injury. His action was at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
