The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Commander Russell John Bellerby (NSN: 0-58687), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States in amphibious operations in the South Pacific, the North Pacific and the Central Pacific. His performance of duty as Executive Officer of an attack transport during the original Solomon Islands landings, 7 to 9 August 1942, was excellent. His participation in the same capacity in reinforcement landings at Guadalcanal on 13 October and 11 November 1942, was performed with the same excellence. On 11 November 1942, when his ship suffered serious underwater damage form a dive bombing attack, his efforts in damage control contributed materially to keeping the ship afloat. His coolness in combat was an inspiration to others with whom he served. He participated in the amphibious operations to regain Attu and Kiska, and in the amphibious attacks against Kwajalein beginning 31 January 1944, and Guam commencing 21 July 1944, as a member of the staff of a Transport Group Commander. His performance of duty in all operations has been marked by industry, initiative and intelligence which have aided materially in our operations. He has worked long hours in furthering the plans of the Transport Group Commander giving unstintingly of his time and counsel to further the success of our landings. His outstanding service and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Commander Bellerby is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
