The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Gunner’s Mate First Class Roy Amelia Bell (NSN: 2023364), United States Navy, for heroism in the rescue of a seaman from the waters of Humboldt Bay, New Guinea, on 30 March 1945. When the seaman became stricken with cramps, and was being carried out to sea by the strong current, Gunner’s Mate First Class Bell swam through the heavy ground swells and succeeded in bringing him safely to the beach. His courage was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
