The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Gordon Woolfolk Bell (NSN: 0-240670), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as the pilot of a carrier-based Torpedo Plane assigned to attack enemy shipping in the vicinity of the Philippine Islands on 13 November 1944. In the face of intense, accurate anti-aircraft fire he pressed home his attack and scored two direct bomb hits on an enemy medium tanker which later sank. With his two remaining bombs he attacked and sank an enemy small cargo vessel. His courage and skill were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Second Gold Star in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Gordon Woolfolk Bell (NSN: 0-240670), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as pilot of a carrier-based Torpedo Plane assigned to attack enemy shipping in the vicinity of Formosa on 9 January 1945. Despite adverse weather conditions and in the face of intense, accurate anti-aircraft fire, he scored a direct bomb hit on an enemy large oiler. Because one of his bombs failed to release during the attack, he made a second attack, through intense, accurate anti-aircraft fire on an enemy shore installation, destroying one of the buildings. His courage and skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
