The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Radioman Second Class Clyde Begley (NSN: 6343453), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an aircrewman of a carrier-based dive bombing airplane assigned to attack major enemy fleet forces on 20 June 1944. While retiring after the dive on a large enemy carrier he strafed anti-aircraft gun positions on a screening vessel, reducing the accuracy of its fire. He assisted his pilot by skillful use of his radio equipment to return through the night to land aboard a carrier. His skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
