    February 19 – March 7, 1945

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Peter W. Beers (NSN: 0-121884), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as the pilot of an Avenger Torpedo Plane assigned to aerial observation and direct support missions over a heavily-fortified objective in connection with the assault upon Iwo Jima in the period 19 February to 7 March 1945. His observation flights were continually subjected to enemy fire which was particularly dangerous due to the low altitude necessary for efficient observation. Through the skillful handling of his plane, he enabled his observer to keep a clear picture of the operations on the objective and materially assisted in locating friendly and enemy positions, thereby contributing to the success of the whole operation. On assigned direct support missions, the accuracy of his bombing of enemy strong-points rendered timely assistance to ground troops. His courage and efficiency under fire were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
