The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class Carleton Merel Beck (NSN: 3930811), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism in the line of his profession and extreme disregard of his own personal safety during the action with an enemy submarine on 30 August 1942. Under extremely difficult and hazardous conditions he was successful in controlling damage in the after engine room to an extent that allowed the U.S.S. CASCO to remain underway and prevent further damage.
