The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Delmar H. Daniels (ASN: 20634218), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 126th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 1 December 1942, during the Papuan Campaign at Buna, New Guinea. After several attempts by his platoon to overcome an enemy strongpoint, where heavy casualties had been suffered, Staff Sergeant Daniels asked for volunteers for another attempt to take this position, which had held up our advance for several days. Some enemy snipers and machine guns completely covered the area to be crossed, but with disregard for his own safety, he led three volunteers across a cleared area in the face of heavy enemy fire. Staff Sergeant Daniels was killed by sniper fire during this action. Staff Sergeant Daniels’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
