The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) J. S. Daniell (ASN: 0-697008), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as Pilot of a P-51 Fighter Airplane in the 505th Fighter Squadron, 339th Fighter Group, EIGHTH Air Force, in aerial combat against enemy forces in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. Despite adverse weather conditions Lieutenant Daniell, by his piloting skill, sound tactical judgment and marked aggressiveness, materially contributed to the success of the bomber escort missions over the Siegfried Defenses, 2 January 1945, over Mannheim, Germany, 21 January 1945, and over Frankfurt, Germany, 21 February 1945. The superior airmanship and courageous devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Daniell on these occasions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Army Air Forces.
