The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Melvin E. Danhaus (ASN: 16054141), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving Company A, 1st Battalion, 142d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Mount Lungo, Italy, on 15 December 1943. During an advance across an open field, Private Danhaus’ platoon became subjected to intense enemy machine gun and rifle fire. Taking the lead, Private Danhaus skillfully moved to a point within 20 feet of a German-held wooded bluff from which the bulk of the enemy fire was being delivered. Realizing the hazard of this fire on his unit, he unhesitatingly made his way over the rocky, exposed approach to the position and charged the stronghold, single-handedly routing the enemy with hand grenades and rifle fire. By his heroic action the company was enabled to advance with slight opposition to seize its objective. Private Danhaus’ display of courage and his coolness under fire were an inspiration to all who witnessed his action. His personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
