The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Andrew S. Bearwa (NSN: 0-320876), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against the enemy in the Tokyo area on 17 February 1945. Flying as wingman in the high cover escort for a formation of carrier-based bombers, he helped protect the bombers in flight 120 miles over enemy territory which was defended both by enemy fighters and anti-aircraft fire. While protecting the bombers, he engaged several enemy fighters, one of which he destroyed in the air. Over the target, an aircraft engine plant, in the face of intense and accurate enemy anti-aircraft fire, he made a strafing attack on surrounding gun positions. Part of his return flight and his landing were made in extremely hazardous weather conditions. His courage and determination, and devotion to duty in the execution of his mission, were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
