(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Air Corps) Frederick William Dallas, Jr. (ASN: 0-404865), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Pilot of a B-17 Heavy Bomber of the 97th Bombardment Group, TWELFTH Air Force, during an air mission near Bizerte, North Africa, on 19 January 1943. Six enemy fighters jumped his plane, and bullets poured through his Flying Fortress. Every man aboard, including Captain Dallas, was wounded. As pain from a chest wound pumped through his body, Captain Dallas delicately bounced the Fortress off two hillsides to slow it down. As he brought it to a halt on a mountainside, the plane caught fire and Captain Dallas dashed into the burning craft and saved the lives of his crew. Captain Dallas’ unquestionable valor in aerial combat is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
