The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Gunner’s Mate Second Class Norman “L” Beach (NSN: 3115373), United States Navy, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy on 17 April 1945. Seeing the struggles of a shipmate, who he knew was unable to swim, Gunner’s Mate Second Class Beach went over the side, risking his life in shark infested waters and towed the man alongside the ship. His action saved his ship several minutes of slow maneuvering in waters known to contain Japanese submarines. Gunner’s Mate Second Class Beach’s conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
