The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Boatswain Robert Joseph Baumker (NSN: 83475), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action following the sinking of the U.S.S. PECOS (AO-6) on 1 March 1942. By his coolness, courage, and persistence, he greatly assisted in keeping the ship afloat for a considerable time. His foresight and actions during the engagement were outstanding. As the ship was sinking he insisted that several wounded be placed in a raft first and later that they be assisted first on board the rescuing destroyer. Due to this brave act he was unable himself to get aboard the destroyer. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
