The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Watertender First Class Carl Darwin Baumeister (NSN: 6700950), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving aboard the U.S.S. HUGHES (DD-410) on 10 December 1944, off Leyte, Philippine Islands. When his ship was hit and severely damaged by an enemy bomb, Watertender First Class Baumeister, despite his serious wounds and burning clothing, exerted himself in fighting fires and protecting his ship from further damage. His quick action saved much valuable equipment and his ship from probable loss. His courage and conduct were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
