The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Construction Mechanic First Class Everett Ernest Baugerer, United States Navy, for heroism in life saving on 1 November 1943, while attached to and serving at the Naval Operating Base, Midway Islands, when he fought his way through gasoline flames in a sinking twenty-six foot motor whaleboat and obtained two life jackets stowed in the bow of the boat, and plunged into the water placing one life jacket on a fellow seaman, who could not swim, and the other on a Marine Sergeant, who was a poor swimmer, and kept them together and afloat until rescued. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
