The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign Carl Daniel Bauer (NSN: 0-83319), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the line of his profession as a Patrol Plane Commander during the operations of the U.S. Naval and Marine forces on Midway Islands against the invading Japanese Fleet on 4 – 5 June 1942. On the morning of 5 June, when it became definitely certain that the enemy was attempting to withdraw from the action he, despite hostile anti-aircraft fire and the efforts of enemy aircraft superior in performance and gun power, located, reported, and tracked units of the Japanese Fleet thus aiding greatly toward the defeat of the enemy. His courage and determination and utter disregard for personal safety were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
