The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Commander (MC) William Copeland Baty, Jr. (NSN: 0-62807), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Surgeon on the Staff of the Commanding General of a Marine Division during the battle for Saipan and Tinian from 15 June to 1 August 1944. Immediately upon landing on these islands, Commander Baty efficiently organized all evacuation for wounded returning to the beaches, established field hospitals, maintaining evacuation over the lengthening lines of communication as the operations progressed. His keen foresight in anticipation of medical needs, in the combat zone and his wise distribution of the facilities at hand were responsible for the saving of many lives. His constant attention to the enforcement of sanitary measures throughout the battles was of great value in maintaining the health of the division. His outstanding professional ability, resourcefulness and devotion to duty were an inspiration to all with whom he came into contact and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
