    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Motor Machinist’s Mate Leonard Fred Bathel (NSN: 3165064), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in combat during six extensive war patrols in enemy controlled waters as the Motor Machinist’s Mate in charge of the auxiliary force of a United States Submarine. His zeal and initiative, and his skill have been instrumental in the upkeep, operation, and repair of the auxiliary engineering equipment of the ship. As air manifold man and first loader on the deck gun he directly contributed to the Commanding Officer’s ability to sink over 59,000 tons and severely damage over 71,000 tons of Japanese warships and merchant shipping. His calm manner and outstanding characteristics of leadership have been in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
