    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunner’s Mate First Class Bert Samuel Bates (NSN: 2797942), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy in the performance of his duties as Sound Operator aboard the U.S.S. BANG (SS-385), during a War Patrol of that Submarine during World War II. His skill and ability in the maintenance of sound equipment and exceptional proficiency in furnishing accurate information to his Commanding Officer contributed directly to the success of his vessel in sinking enemy vessels for a total of more than 30,000 tons, and damaging additional shipping totaling over 9,000 tons. His coolness and efficiency contributed materially to the success of his vessel in evading strong enemy counterattacks and in returning to port safely. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to all with whom he served and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
