The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Shipfitter Third Class Wayne H. Bass (NSN: 8851988), United States Navy, for heroism beyond the line of duty. On 12 November 1944, when an enemy plane dove into the U.S.S. ACHILLES (ARL-41), in San Pedro Bay, Philippine Islands, Shipfitter Third Class Bass’s hands were badly burned. In spite of his condition, in the face of exploding shells, he climbed on top of the forward deckhouse and tended a fire hose until the ammunition had cooled, preventing further spread of the fire. His heroic conduct was an inspiration to his shipmates and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
