The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunner’s Mate First Class Arthur Bartosch (NSN: 6002071), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Gunner’s Mate aboard the LCT(L) 122 on radar picket duty on 11 June 1945, during the amphibious assault on Okinawa when that vessel was simultaneously attacked by three Japanese suicide planes and one plane struck the ship and started raging fires near the loaded 4.5 inch rocket ready racks and the 40-mm. ammunition magazines. Gunner’s Mate First Class Bartosch, with great courage and presence of mind calmed the men near his station and, despite the flames and imminent danger of exploding ammunition, made his way to the vicinity of the blazing plane and set off the magazine sprinklers, thus preventing a disastrous explosion with subsequent loss of the ship and great loss of lives. After this action he continued to fight fires until his ship was no longer in danger. His courage and leadership and devotion to duty were inspirational and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
