(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class John Czinki (ASN: 36870963), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 362d Infantry Regiment, 91st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Poto, Italy, on 20 September 1944. Private Czinki’s battalion was in and advance unit, and he was sent to check on another battalion on the right flank. Looking down he saw a group of soldiers, unable to determine by the helmets if their were American’s or Germans. He asked his Lieutenant, “Have we any troops down below?” Informed there were none he scrambled down the bank alone with his Lieutenant covering him from up the hill. Private Czinki ran to the first pillbox, where he found an enemy soldier standing half out of the emplacement. He pulled a pin from a grenade and prepared to throw it, challenging the enemy soldier to put up his arms and surrender. Continuing his one-man assault on additional enemy nests, the intrepid soldier captured 43 Germans. Private First Class Czinki’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 91st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
