The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Motor Machinist’s Mate Second Class George G. Barton (NSN: 6087160), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on 6 May 1945, as a member of the crew of a United States vessel, during the assault on Okinawa Shima. After his ship had been hit and serious damage resulted, he, despite exploding ammunition, immediately and without hesitation successfully fought the raging fires. By his quick thinking, cool courage and determination, in the face of extreme danger, aided immeasurably in saving the vessel from complete destruction. His courage and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
