The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Claude N. Barton (NSN: 0-115150), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the line of his profession as pilot of a U.S. Torpedo Bomber on 15 July 1943, when an enemy submarine was attacked. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Barton was engaged in an anti-submarine patrol when he sighted an enemy submarine. Immediately on the completion of a companion fighter plane’s strafing attack he maneuvered his plane into position and attacked. The attack was extremely accurate, a direct and probable lethal hit being scored on the submerging submarine. The action described above in which an enemy submarine was probably destroyed through a coordinated fighter-bomber attack reflects great credit upon the United States Naval Service.
