The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class Donald Francis Bartlett, United States Navy, for heroism on 13 July 1945, when he rescued an injured pilot from a burning Marine Corsair fighter plane which crashed on an airfield in the Ryukyu Islands while landing. With disregard for burning gasoline and exploding ammunition he assisted in removing the injured pilot. His quick comprehension of the injured man’s plight and his prompt action were responsible for saving the Pilot’s life. His heroic conduct in the face of great danger was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
