The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign Robert W. Barry (NSN: 0-299273), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights from 25 to 27 October 1944, from the escort carrier U.S.S. SANTEE (CVE-29). On one occasion Ensign Barry was on Local Combat Air Patrol when the carrier division over which he was flying came under heavy aerial attack by enemy planes. With complete disregard for his own safety he flew through a hail of friendly anti-aircraft fire to destroy in flames an enemy plane loaded with bombs destined for our forces. His quick action and brave and skillful flying was a definite factor in repelling this attack on our already damaged forces. His actions on this occasion were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
