James Cushing and his brother Walter Cushing were born in Mexico before moving to California. Both served in the Philippine Islands during World War II. His brother Walter was captured by the Japanese and died in captivity. They were one of only three sets of brothers to each earn the Distinguished Service Cross during World War II.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Corps of Engineers) James M. Cushing, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy, in action against enemy forces while commanding guerilla forces in the Cebu Area, Philippine Islands, from 22 January 1944 through 23 March 1945. Lieutenant Colonel Cushing’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
