    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class John Arthur Curtiss (ASN: 33733778), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy, in action against enemy forces near Pinamopean, Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 24 November 1944. Private First Class Curtiss captured an enemy machine gun, single-handedly, when it blocked his supply detail along the trail. He was wounded in the neck and hand, but killed one Japanese and routed the others. As they fled, he turned the captured machinegun on them and killed several more. Private First Class Curtiss’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
